Data centres now support a massive range of appliances (bespoke servers) running specific and discreet functions e.g. firewalls, email gateways, load balancers. Various factors will dictate how many of these discreet appliances or servers exist, but the number has grown exponentially in the last few years as the growth of services such as email, intranets, virus protection, intrusion prevention, spam filtering, web content etc. has continued. Many organisations are surprised to find out how many firewalls they operate, or how many load balancers they have in front of their Web servers. In most cases, legacy bespoke servers or even new appliances have massive potential for consolidation and can deliver significant consolidation and service improvement opportunities. |
