A report from Global Action Plan and the Environmental IT Leadership Team (EILT) tells us that ICT carbon emissions will surpass aviation's in 2008. It also reveals massive inefficiencies in how we use ICT. Unlike the aviation industry though, there are no protesters for this poster child...
...40% of servers are underutilised by around 50%...and 37% of companies are storing data indefinitely...yet 61% of datacentres only have capacity for two years of growth.
Logicalis believes that to be green is really about having an efficient IT strategy, and that unless a server can grow branches, emit oxygen and become a safe habitat for squirrels, it's hard to see how green IT can be. But on a daily basis the IT industry continues to trumpet the latest in green technology.
A cynical person would suggest that this bandwagon is laden with £ signs...
If green IT really does exist then maybe it's more about an approach or strategy rather than the product. For example, can a green server help support your organisations' CSR strategy if it's not maximised to the full?
If this is the case, isn't it time to face the truth about green IT?
