Logicalis gets on its Energy Bike at Storage Expo 2006

Demonstrates technologies and launches initiatives to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change

London, Wednesday 18th October, 2006 – Logicalis will be putting a particular focus on the role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in reducing climate change due to global warming at Storage Expo 2006. Pride of place in this respect on the stand (Number 546) at this year's show will be the Global Action Plan Energy Bike.

Visitors to the show will be invited onto the Logicalis stand to pedal hard on the Energy Bike to see how much effort it takes to produce the energy just to power a laptop. According to Logicalis managing director, Tom Kelly, "the power consumed by ICT installations is a major contributor to global warming and we have to act together to reduce this threat."

According to Kelly, the storage industry is right at the centre of the opportunity. "There is currently a 44 per cent year on year growth in the amount of storage purchased in the UK , yet much of the time most of the capacity remains unused but still consuming power," he says.

Global Action Plan educators will also be present on the Logicalis stand to provide environmental advice to all show delegates wishing to understand how they can play a major part in their organisation's energy efficiency programmes.

Virtualisation and Global Action Plan

Storage virtualisation has a key role to play in increasing the efficiency of storage to enable its carbon footprint to be lowered. To help visitors make environmentally sound architecture decisions, Logicalis will be showing a range of virtualisation technologies from VMware and other suppliers including Virtuozzo and Virtual Iron.

Global Action Plan is a practical environmental charity, with which Logicalis has partnered to encourage ICT users to lower their carbon emissions.

Through Global Action Plan, Logicalis will offer independent environmental training programs to existing clients through its CIO engagement programme, and will be the first Systems Integrator in the UK to offer the subsidised environmental training, as part of new business proposals and contract negotiations.

The training will be based on the Global Action Plan Environmental Champions Programme. The Programme is designed to enable employees to measure their own and their organisation's environmental impact. In particular, the Programme focuses on minimising consumption of resources and raw materials and reducing harmful emissions from transport and office energy consumption, of which IT plays a growing part.

Show attendees are welcome to come and discuss their environmental issues and sign up for Global Action Plan's Environmental Champions and other programmes.

"Strategies such as cutting data centre power by just five percent, through simply using storage more efficiently, if repeated cumulatively in every such facility in the UK , could make a significant difference – the issue is getting people to own the problem and understand their role wherever it lies in the ICT supply chain," concludes Kelly.

"As a responsible provider of ICT solutions we believe we must deliver some assistance to our clients on understanding the environmental impact and benefits of our joint endeavours. Our partnership with Global Action Plan demonstrates our commitment to be a true partner to our clients and address the biggest issue facing both the UK public and private sectors."

About Global Action Plan

Global Action Plan was created in 1993 as a different kind of environmental organisation, focusing on people and how they can take practical action in their everyday lives for a better world. Global Action Plan offices have opened around the world to take up the challenge. In the UK , the charity has helped thousands of people and organisations to make substantial environmental and financial savings.

In homes. We bring people together socially and help households to save resources and money - which also sparks new friendships and neighbourhood projects.

In businesses. Working with us, employees come together to help their organisation to achieve environmental and financial savings by making simple changes to their working practices.

In schools. Our whole-school approach involves students, teachers and the wider community. The curriculum-linked activities provide innovative environmental education and save precious resources for schools.

In communities. Our community projects respond to local needs. By connecting people and helping them access local resources; these projects go beyond environmental savings and help to build stronger communities.

Global Action Plan has created a framework for change that works.

Practical and positive. It can be hard for people to tackle overwhelming environmental issues like climate change – so we break them down into small steps that everyone can take, like unplugging mobile phone chargers when they're not being used.

Measurable. We help people to see the difference they are making by measuring the resources saved as a result of their actions, and those of their community.

For example, just 63 households in our Nottingham EcoTeams programme have saved 7 tonnes from ending up on the rubbish mountain.

Interactive. Changing habit alone is difficult. Watch a team of businessmen build a teetering tower of paper in their corporate lobby, and you'll see what's different about Global Action Plan. By supporting groups of people working together, we make taking action easier, more creative and much more fun.

Inclusive. Everyone gets switched on by different things. Working with all kinds of individuals and organisations has enabled us to come up with a range of imaginative ways to communicate. Try riding our Energy Bike for a totally different way of making the connection between energy use and climate change.
