Gartner takes a look at enterprise backup and recovery In July 2005, analyst firm Gartner published its latest research on vendor performance, the 'Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Backup/Recovery Software, 2005'. Gartner's brief summary of the report is: "Enterprise backup/recovery software products continue to offer richer tools even as they improve ease of use and simplify packaging. As this market turns its focus more toward recovery, leading vendors are expanding their snapshot management and disk backup support." For those that haven't come across Gartner's 'Magic Quadrant', it is the basis of an ongoing series of reports on various sectors of the IT industry. They describe how vendors perform in relation to each other and make predictions about the strategic direction of the marketplace, as in the quote above. The reports measure vendors along two scales, 'ability to execute' and 'completeness of vision'. Vendors are then placed into four quadrants of a box according to their scores, these are marked: challengers, leaders, niche players and visionaries. John Hammond, Commercial Director, Logicalis Computing Solutions comments: "We believe Gartner's magic quadrant approach is a very useful way for technology users to understand what is going on in the marketplace and where it might be heading. What is clear is that the current enterprise backup/recovery software marketplace is mature; and one where only specialist vendors have survived or been absorbed into the winners." "This means that each of the vendors have a substantial user base and a proven, effective product suite. Because of this, Logicalis, with its broad range of customers and infrastructures for which it provides managed services, must have in-depth expertise in all the products of the main vendors in this segment. This we do through our partnerships with Symantec, IBM, HP and Legato EMC, and in working with their technologies and those from other vendors on a day-to-day basis."We believe that every product has its own unique strengths and weaknesses depending on a specific implementation. This can only be properly ascertained though experience of a technology day-in, day-out. As Logicalis works at an in-depth technical level with our partners and has extensive experience of implementing and operating solutions, we are in a position to make independent judgements but also to ensure that the customer gets exactly the right solution for their need - wherever a vendor might be positioned in the magic quadrant.
